Walmart acquired online retailer Jet.com back in 2016 for the price of $3 billion and the company has now announced the relaunch of the site with several new features. It looks like Walmart wants to take on online giants like Amazon. The relaunched Jet.com is now more focused on customers in major cities like New York where their experience is going to be tailored with messages and imagery that’s localized.
Jet.com will also now offer three-hour deliveries which directly competes with Amazon’s same-day grocery delivery service. This is an interesting move by Walmart. Jet’s decisions about the products that are featured in that particular region will be based on this as well as the site transitions from a daytime theme to a nighttime theme. This experience will be limited to shoppers in New York at first but will hit other cities very soon.
Customers in New York City can get three-hour delivery on a variety of items including but not limited to the stuff you might expect like groceries, everyday essentials, and products from local businesses. Customers will be able to give instructions on where the items are to be left and they will be sent to them in insulated, recyclable bags that can keep food cold for up to three hours. Something tells me they will love this service.
The company will be fulfilling deliveries via Parcel, the same-day delivery company that Walmart acquired last year. Users can shop through Siri via the mobile app. But can they compete with Amazon? We will see?
